A new event comes to New York City’s vibrant chess community…

The “Rapid Chess Challenge”.

Chess Educators is honored to organize the 2012 New York City Rapid Chess Challenge. ROSNEFT is sponsoring four events for junior chess players in the months of October and November of 2012. These events are taking place in London, New York City, Geneva and Beijing.

London has already launched their event and now it’s time for chess players in New York City to celebrate chess in the city that never sleeps.

This tournament has some very special features…

  • A NEVER-DONE-BEFORE-FEATURE JUST IN TIME FOR HALLOWEEN – CHESS FACE PAINTING!

OPEN TO STUDENTS GRADES K-12 FROM NEW YORK AND SURROUNDING STATES.

The USCF quick rating and FIDE rapid chess rating will be used to sanction this tournament.

The New York City event will be held at the United Nations International School “UNIS”, located at 24-50 FDR Drive, New York, New York
10010.

Important Note:  Pre-registration is required for all chess players. Parents and coaches must bring a photo I.D. to the event, this does not apply to  children.

Tournament Format

  • Participants: Open to students grades K-12.
  • Number of rounds: 4
  • Pairing system: Swiss
  • Time Control: Game 20 per player
  • Sections: Grades K-1 Championship, Grades K-3 Championship, Grades K-5 Championship, Grades K-8 Championship, Grades K-12 Championship

Parent Supervision is required.  Please bring snacks and lunch.

Awards

Trophies for top 5 players in each section; Trophy for the top girl in each section; Medals for all participants

Registrations

No Entry Fee. PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. REGISTRATIONS MUST BE RECEIVED BY OCTOBER 26, 2012.

Equipment

Chess sets and boards will be provided by the organization. Players must bring their chess clock. Chess clocks can be purchased at the event.

Schedule

  • On site check-in for players: 10:00 am – 10:45 am
  • Opening Ceremony: 10:45am – 11am
  • Round 1: 11 am – 11:40 am
  • Round 2: 11:50 – 12:30 pm
  • Round 3: 12:40 pm – 1:20 pm
  • Round 4: 1: 30 – 2: 10 pm
  • Award Ceremony: 2:30pm

Directions to UNIS Manhattan

By Car and approaching from south of 23rd Street:  FDR Drive to the 20th-23rd Street exit, then onto the FDR Drive Service Road (along the East River) to 25th Street. The School’s entrance is on the river side between the Marina and Waterside Plaza. Parking is available for a fee at both the Marina at 23rd Street and at Waterside Plaza at 25th Street.

By Car and approaching from north of 23rd Street:  FDR Drive to the 23rd Street Exit; make a left at the 23rd Street traffic light and go underneath the FDR Drive; make a second left (bearing to the right) at the next traffic light onto the FDR Drive Service Road (along the East River) to 25th Street. The School’s entrance is between the Marina and Waterside Plaza. Parking is available for a fee at the Marina at 23rd Street and at Waterside Plaza at 25th Street.

By Taxi:  If coming by taxi, ask the driver to take you to “Waterside Plaza” and exit the cab just before Waterside Plaza.

By subway:  Trains 1, 6, E, F, Q, 63 St/6 Ave Shuttle, or W to the 23rd Street station; then take the 23rd Street crosstown bus east (M23) to FDR Drive. Walk under the FDR Drive, turn left at the Marina, and walk north two blocks along the East River. The School’s entrance is on the river side between the Marina and Waterside Plaza.

By bus:  Any north or southbound bus to 23rd Street; transfer to the 23rd Street crosstown bus (M23) to the FDR Drive. Walk under the FDR drive, turn left at the Marina, and walk north two blocks along the East River. The School’s entrance is between the Marina and Waterside Plaza.Or take the 34th Street crosstown bus (M-16 Waterside) east to Waterside Plaza (last stop).

By foot:  Take the pedestrian footbridge at the end of East 25th Street over the FDR Drive and follow the ramp to the right.
